Introduction to Kayaking

American Canoe Association (ACA) Level 1: Introduction to Kayaking

This 6+ hour course is designed as a short program emphasizing the entry-level paddling skills for individuals desiring an introduction to the sport of kayaking. It would be perfect for those individuals with little to no paddling skill, or for those who would like to learn more about proper kayaking form and safety. Topics covered will include: personal clothing and equipment, loading/unloading, knots, kayak lifts and carries, launching/landing from shore and dock, posture, trip planning, group dynamics, judgment, laws/regulations, equipment (kayak paddle, lifejacket, safety equipment, group equipment, and care of equipment), safety and rescue (responsibility of group/individual/rescuer/victim, rescue priorities, signals, group management, hypothermia, hyperthermia, water confidence/comfort, rescue sequence, deep water exits, controlled capsize, swimming a boat to shore, how to empty a boat full of water, kayak t-rescue, side by side rescue, and re-entry), as well as kayak maneuvers and strokes.  How to paddle in a reasonably straight line, stop within a reasonable distance and how to spin/turn the kayak.

This course will initially take place within a protected cove near the Camacho Center and Fiesta Gardens. As participants’ skill and comfort levels positively increase, we will progress towards a less-protected area of Lady Bird Lake, and then continue on to the halfway point of the Longhorm Dam Loop of the Lady Bird Lake Paddling Trail. We will continue paddling towards the west end of the lake as time permits. Recommended additions to this course include our Flatwater Kayak Safety & Rescue Course (4+ hours).
