SmartStart Kayak Orientation

American Canoe Association (ACA) Level 1: SmartStart Paddling Orientation- Kayak
This 45 minute-1 hour course will expose participants to the basic safety and paddling skills associated with kayaking. This course is perfect for those new to paddling or for seasoned paddlers looking to refresh their skills and knowledge. Topics covered will include: paddling preparedness, being considerate of others, paying attention, drugs/alcohol, properly-fitting a PFD (Personal Flotation Device), cold water, stabilizing boat, weather and waves, hazards, getting wet/self rescues, boat/paddle anatomy, how to get into boat, various strokes/maneuvers to help you be successful while paddling, the paddling environment (wind, waves, weather, water), as well as the importance of additional instruction.
We will meet at the Camacho Center at 34 Robert T. Martinez in Austin to engage in these topics.
Please keep in mind that this course will last no longer than 1 hour and to be appropriately ready to paddle on your own, The Expedition School suggests longer and more in-depth courses such as our Level 1: Quickstart Your Kayak (3-4 hours) or our Level 1: Introduction to Kayaking (6-8 hours), as well as a more advanced Flatwater Kayak or Canoe Safety & Rescue Course (4+ hours).

What to bring: weather appropriate clothing (no cotton clothing), closed toed shoes that you don’t mind getting wet, water/snacks, notepad and pen.
