SUP History in Austin and Lady Bird Lake: Bringing Aloha from the shores of Hawaii to the waterways of Austin, Texas.
Kimery Duda, Founder and Executive Director, fished the banks of Lady Bird Lake with her father and brothers throughout the 70’s and 80’s. Little did she know that decades later, she would return to her stomping grounds on a surfboard then later - a Stand Up Paddleboard! Duda first started Stand Up Paddling on the North Shore, Oahu - taught by legend surfer and phenom SUP shaper, Blane Chambers and the Blue Tent Crew in the spring of 2006 while she was working as an expedition surf guide. When the waves went flat on North Shore, Chambers invited Duda to check out SUP - on one of his most recently shaped SUP boards. After cruising Puaena Point for a few hours, Duda was instantly hooked. Upon her return to Austin, she began to SUP on Lady Bird Lake – earning the nickname “our lady of the lake” from the local fishermen. Duda was the first to introduce and share the stoke of SUP to Austin. The Expedition School is honored to offer Austin’s first Stand Up Paddle Program in and around the great water ways of our town.
