Explore the Grand Canyon:
This April, The Expedition School invites the SSES th Upper School & 8th grade class - to experience an adventure of a lifetime: a river trip on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. This 5 day journey takes us on a four day river trip along the Colorado Plateau of the Grand Canyon. We launch at Diamond Creek and take out at the South Cove on Lake Meade. Students are involved in every facet of the trip. On-river activities include rigging the rafts, paddling, cooking, camp chores, epic hikes into the canyon, bouldering and climbing on sandstone rock formations, and giving educational talks. This is an excellent beginner whitewater trip.

Prerequisites for the trip:

Students must be currently enrolled at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School and currently attending 8th - 12th grades. Individual prereq’s include 8 hours of community service and completion of an educational project of the students choice that must be related to the culture and natural history of the Colorado Plateau (students are to present their project while on the
river trip).

Mental and physical challenges:
Not only will we experience what nature has to offer, but we will meet other professional guides, educators, and scientists that will show us the true sanctuaries of the Grand Canyon. Our itinerary is fun, but extremely challenging. Once we land in Flagstaff, Arizona, we are on the go – so it is imperative that the individuals on this trip are physically as well as mentally prepared. Therefore, we require that students attend all pre-trip meetings; possess solid swimming skills; be comfortable in personal water crafts (kayaks, rafts); in excellent physical condition; and have a passion for the outdoors. Although the trip is open to all grades, Kimery will assess each student on an individual basis.
